Diabetes and Me
What’s it like to be a high school athlete and wake up one morning and find out that you have juvenile diabetes? What goes through your mind, how do you interact with your friends, coaches, teachers and parents? How do you carry on a “normal life?”
One in three children born after 2000 will be diagnosed with diabetes at some point in their lifetime. Deborah Schroeder, University of Nebraska-Lincoln extension educator in Cumings County says that diabetes can be the result of genetics, however, obesity is a major contributing factor. Schroeder says diabetes is a growing concern in the United States.
Robert Kreikemeier of West Point, Nebraska is now a college sophomore at Kansas State University. He talks openly about his life with Juvenile Diabetes to an audience of young people and their parents. He explains his feelings as he first learned he had diabetes and how he learned to managed his diabetes in high school with the help of his teachers, coaches, parents and friends. Kreikemeier explains that going to college brought about a new set of challenges. His regimented high school schedule and home life quickly changed to an irregular schedule of classes, meals, social activities and no parents to watch over him.
Kreikemeier’s presentation, "Diabetes and Me" offers hope to young people with Juvenile Diabetes. He shares his life experiences with the disease with frankness and humor.

George Beadle, An Uncommon Farmer: The Emergence of Genetics in the 20th Century
George Wells Beadle was an American scientist in the field of genetics. He shared half of the 1958 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with Edward Lawrie Tatum for their discovery that genes act by regulating biochemical events within the cell. The other half of that year’s award went to Joshua Lederberg.
Beadle and Tatum’s key experiments involved exposing the bread mold Neurospora crassa to x-rays, causing mutations. In a series of experiments, they showed that these mutations caused changes in specific enzymes involved in metabolic pathways. These experiments led them to propose a direct link between genes and enzymatic reactions, known as the "one gene, one enzyme" hypothesis.

International Beef Market Opportunities

Positioning Nebraska to Capture Niche International Beef Market Opportunities
The Nebraska Department of Agriculture, Nebraska Beef Council and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension partnered in late February to conduct the International Beef Market Opportunities Seminar, designed to inform Nebraska’s beef producers about the steps they must take to raise age- and source-verified livestock for overseas export, and the potential benefits to taking such steps.
International outreach efforts by NDA over the past year have shown that importers, restaurateurs, and other key food purchasers in specific markets are looking for a reliable provider of age- and source-verified beef in order to meet growing consumer demand. Beef production partners are interested in fulfilling this demand for age- and source-verified beef - from the importer, to the packer, to the feedlot, to the farmer/rancher. But education is needed - particularly education at the most important level of the production chain - the farmer/rancher.
By clicking on the links found here, farmers, ranchers, feedlot managers, and other interested parties can access the seminar in six manageable chapters.
